Hot on the heals of one of the most popular movies of the year comes Halloween. A wolverine costume seemed like just what was needed.

The wife and I decided to go as Deadpool & Wolverine. We started simply with the cheapest AliExpress Wolverine costume we could find. Once it arrived, we realized these were in fact skin tight, which is fine if you are in peek physical condition, but as a couple of 40 year olds, that’s not really happening. So I started building out some accessories for the costume.

Cowl

I found this great template and tutorial from SKS Props on YouTube. I got myself a bunch of EVA foam and got to work. You can find all the SKS Props templates online which include many other cosplay designs.

Claws

There are lots of different ways to go for Wolverine claws. Cardboard, wood, or foam are very popular. I had 2 concerns:

  1. They had to be fairly rigid so as to not warp or misshape.
  2. Could not be stiff and hard as to hurt anyone or get in the way.
  3. I still had to be able to use my hand (mostly) so holding a set of claws was not going to happen.

I ended up combining multiple designs online into my wolverine claw template (below). The procedure to create them is:

  1. Cut the design out 12 times from 6mm eva foam.
  2. Cut a small channel in each piece & insert a thin wooden dowl or skewer in the center, for stability.
  3. Use contact cement to glue the two halves together, embedding the wooden support in the center.
  4. Trim the pieces up and sand pointy-ish edges onto the claws.
  5. Plasti-dip & paint.
  6. Cut out the glove support piece from 4mm foam
  7. Insert into the top of your glove
  8. Hot glue (carefully!) the claw to the glove, ensuring the glove is thin enough for the glue to seep through to the foam, binding the top of the foam claw to the glove and the foam.
  9. Cut a small hole between the fingers to insert the bottom part of the claw.
  10. Use a small piece of foam or plywood to attach the bottom pieces together, inside the glove.

Belt

I thought this was optional as the suit already has one designed onto it, but I thought it would give it more detail & depth, and I couldn’t be happier. I used another SKS Props template for Wolverine armor & picked the belt pieces out. I took some liberty with the buckle design but essentially its this pattern.
